Centralia Train Accident: Joel Firebaugh Killed by Amtrak Train, Investigation Ongoing
On March 11, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Centralia, Illinois, when Joel Firebaugh, a 66-year-old local resident, was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near North Broadway and Oak Street. The train, identified as the Illini 393, was traveling from Chicago to Carbondale and was slowing down as it approached the Centralia Depot. Despite this, it was still moving at an estimated 32 miles per hour when it hit Firebaugh, who was attempting to cross the tracks. Emergency services, including Centralia Police, fire, and EMS, responded quickly, but Firebaugh was pronounced dead at the scene. The train, carrying 47 passengers and crew, was delayed for about an hour, with no injuries reported among those onboard.
The Centralia Police Department and the Marion County Coroner’s office are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Firebaugh’s death. While the exact cause remains unclear, records show that Firebaugh had a history of trespassing at the Centralia Amtrak Station, including charges of aggravated battery and trespassing in 2023 at the same location. This incident has sparked discussions about pedestrian safety near railroad tracks, particularly in areas with frequent train activity. As the investigation continues, the community awaits further details to understand how this tragedy unfolded.
