Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near Midway Airport Claims Life of Jamie T. Cerney
On March 17, 2025, at approximately 11:14 p.m., a three-vehicle collision occurred in the 5200 block of West 63rd Street near Midway Airport in Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the death of a pedestrian and damage to an airport hangar. According to the Chicago Police Department, a white Infiniti sedan sideswiped a black Infiniti sedan, after which one of the Infiniti vehicles struck a Nissan traveling in the same direction. The white Infiniti then veered off the road, jumped the curb, and struck Jamie T. Cerney, a 38-year-old Chicago resident, who was on the sidewalk or nearby. Cerney was transported to Advocate Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following the impact with Cerney, the white Infiniti collided with an airport hangar, causing structural damage.
The driver of the white Infiniti was hospitalized in fair condition, while a female passenger in the same vehicle was transported to the hospital with an unknown condition. The driver of the black Infiniti sustained no injuries but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, and his female passenger was uninjured. The driver of the Nissan was also uninjured and declined medical treatment. The Chicago Police Department is currently investigating the incident, and no citations have been issued as of the latest reports. Ald. Marty Quinn of the 13th Ward expressed condolences and raised concerns about reckless driving in the area, noting the 13th Ward’s history as a hotspot for drag racing and drifting, and advocating for increased police presence to address road safety issues.
